What can I expect on my first session?During your first counseling session, you can expect certain things to take place. Your therapist will likely start by asking you various questions to gather information about you, your coping mechanisms, and your symptoms. This initial conversation can be seen as an interview, where your therapist gets to know you and begins to understand your needs. It's common to spend some time discussing your reasons for seeking counseling and your goals for therapy. You can share what you hope to achieve and any specific areas you'd like to focus on. This helps your therapist tailor their approach to best support you. Additionally, paperwork may be involved in the first session, such as consent forms, confidentiality agreements, or client intake forms. These documents are necessary to ensure ethical and legal guidelines are followed. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the counseling process, such as the frequency of sessions, the length of treatment, and any concerns or expectations you have. Open communication is essential in establishing a strong therapeutic relationship. Remember, the first session can be an opportunity for both you and your therapist to determine if you are a good fit for each other and if their approach aligns with your needs. Building trust and rapport may not happen instantly, but expressing your thoughts and feelings openly can contribute to a positive therapeutic experience.

Do you prescribe medicine for mental conditions? While we are trained professionals who provide counseling and therapy services, we do not have the authority to prescribe medications. Instead, our role often involves working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, such as primary care physicians (PCPs) or psychiatrists, to provide holistic care for clients. Our counselors focus primarily on providing talk therapy, psycho education, and behavioral interventions to help clients address emotional, psychological, and relational concerns. We utilize various therapeutic techniques and approaches to help clients gain insight, develop coping skills, and make positive changes in their lives.
